May: A Month Dedicated to Mary
During May, Catholics are encouraged to deepen their devotion to Mary through prayers like the Hail Mary, Rosary, and other Marian prayers, as well as participating in special ceremonies like May Crowning.
The tradition of dedicating May to Mary has deep roots, with some tracing it back to ancient spring festivals and the medieval period. May is associated with spring and new life, mirroring Mary’s role as the “Mother of God” and the “Mother of the Church” who brought forth Jesus, the source of new life.
Pope Pius XII solidified May as a Marian month in 1945 by establishing the feast of the Queenship of Mary on May 31st.
