Blessing of the Pets Recap

On Wednesday, October 7, we were delighted to welcome more than 20 animals, their humans, and even a few non-pet-owning animal lovers for our annual Blessing of the Pets. Celebrated near the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology, the gathering was a joyful reminder of the special bond we share with God’s creation. St. Francis recognized that our animal companions can draw us closer to God, teaching us gratitude, wonder, and care for all living things.

As we gathered in prayer and blessing, we reflected on the profound connection between faith and creation. Theologian Sr. Elizabeth Johnson writes that in the Incarnation, the Word became not only united with humanity but also with “the whole evolving biological world of living creatures and the cosmic dust of which they are composed.” This understanding reminds us that God’s love extends to all creation and that every creature reflects something of the Creator’s goodness.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this joyful celebration of God’s abundant love for all living beings.
